Toddler bedding
There are various types of bedding furniture designed for babies and children. Parents often use baby cribs as a way of keeping a child safe when the child is sleeping. Cribs are a necessity for a mother of a newborn infant. Cribs are conventionally utilized as sleeping means for infants, typically from birth to an age of 2 to 3 years. Baby cribs are designed from the viewpoint of both convenience and safety and typically provide headboards and footboards, as well as left and right sides which are of sufficient height to prevent any infant from climbing out of the crib and to encourage the infant to stand and grip the crib sides, if necessary, while preventing the child from falling out of the crib. Like an adult bed, a baby crib includes a frame that includes a generally horizontally disposed mattress frame having an upper surface upon which a mattress rests. A headboard is connected at one end of the mattress frame, and a footboard is connected at the other end of the mattress frame. At least one of the sides is movable between a locked upper position and a lowered position to facilitate placement or removal of the child from the crib by the parent, for example. The crib mattress is adjustably arranged to be of a height so that the supporting surface of the crib mattress permits the infant to be placed upon the mattress or removed therefrom without undue bending by the person attending to the infant, while being a sufficient distance below the top sides of the crib to prevent an infant from falling or climbing out. Also similar to an adult bed, the mattress is often overlain with sheets, blankets, and other accessories that may be primarily decorative in nature.
The problem of children falling out of bed is fairly common and devices have been developed over the years to restrain children within a bed. Infants and small children generally require a large measure of protection when playing or sleeping, especially when left alone. The dangers to such small children are numerous, such as falls, bruises, unsanitary areas, such as rugs or floors, onto which the child might stray, or, where a restraint means is used, being caught or tangled in the restraint means. As an infant matures the sleeping arrangements of the infant changes. With a newborn, because the parents want the baby near them, a small crib or bassinet is desired. As the infant gains weight and becomes more independent, the parents desire a secure full size crib. Then, as the child becomes a toddler a toddler bed along with security gates are desired. Growing children progress rapidly through the use of a sequence of furniture and furnishings designed to provide a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for the child. A baby might initially be provided with a cradle as a sleeping environment when little or no movement of the child is anticipated during the night. Very quickly the child graduates into a crib as a sleeping environment before eventually moving into a child or adult sized bed. As infants grow to be toddlers and continue to develop from children into adults, bedding requirements change. Typically, cribs are suitable for infants. More often than not, baby cribs are provided with a boundary disposed about the entire periphery of the mattress for the purpose of protecting and preventing the infant from rolling off of the mattress onto the floor, thus preventing the infant from injuring himself or herself.
