Baby blanket

It is well known that infants require special care and attention. Infants must be kept at a warmer temperature than what is considered normal for adults. The necessity of keeping the baby warm usually requires that the infant be properly covered or clothed at all times. Baby blankets have been used perhaps from time immemorial to wrap or bundle a newborn infant. It is generally known that babies like to be swaddled to be kept warm and to mimic the environment of their mother’s womb. Snugly wrapping a newborn infant in a blanket to form a snug and somewhat confining cocoon about the infant’s body is an effective way to thermally wrap and protect the newborn infant and to maintain the protective wrapping despite the newborn’s involuntary arm and leg movements which might otherwise displace loose covers. Wrapping or swaddling an infant is believed to improve the baby’s comfort, such as by simulating the way a baby would feel in its mother’s womb or arms.

A baby blanket typically comprises a one-piece relatively small and generally flat cover which is typically wrapped around a baby. The protection and comfort of an infant is a primary concern to parents. One area in which this concern is of primary importance is the sleeping conditions provided to the infant. Ordinary baby blankets have several disadvantages as comfort objects. Typical baby blankets are primarily intended to cover or wrap a sleeping baby. The typical baby blanket is easily dropped. Very young infants lack the coordination to hang on to an object for any length of time. The blanket can easily end up covering the baby’s face, which may be a risk factor for crib death. The blanket can also be stepped on, tripping a beginning walker. Older babies often make a game of deliberately dropping things from their high chair or crib. A baby blanket, being merely a small piece of soft cloth, is often pushed aside by the normal movements of a baby, leaving the baby uncovered. Thus, to prevent a baby from being exposed to cold air while sleeping, parents will sometimes tightly wrap a child in a blanket to limit his or her movement.

Blankets especially designed for babies and infants are well known. One type of baby blanket has special features that adapt it to be used with a car seat. Another type of baby blanket has features designed to assure that the blanket stays with the baby and does not fall off the baby as the baby tosses and turns. Normally, parents do not wish to bundle an infant in a lot of clothes when the infant is sleeping because it is uncomfortable for the infant. Therefore, most parents keep the infant warm by placing a blanket over the body of the infant. The infant is kept warm, yet does not require the infant to be bundled in clothing. Small blankets, popularly known as security blankets, are highly desired by most babies. A teddy bear cuddling an ultra-soft double velboa security blanket with satiny edging gives warmth and comfort for baby to cuddly and coo.
